Here I stitched the border as appliqué and then I added a section without the appliqué fabric. You can do it either way. Instructions included for the appliqué.

This shows 4 sections done in metallic threads. Some of them are variegated. They really turned out nice and were very easy to do stitch - even with my ancient Sulky Sliver threads! The picture just doesn't show how great they look.
